Oil Sight Glass repair

The picture shows the original sight glass for the horizontal head wiht the replaced plastic insert. The riginal insert was almost the same colour as the oil and so made for poor visibility. One plastic card and a selection of wad punches later and I had made a new insert. The sight glass now looks as good as new!!

Now I’m ready for the oil and to fire up the F3!!

  1. It`s relative simple, ISO 150 for Head and Headstock (olibath) and ISO 68 Slideway oil for everything else (all the oil-fittings)
Every car oil ist to thin an runs just away, Aciera recommendet slideway oil for a good reason.

  2. Hi Matt

i already messaged but wasn’t sure if it went through

    • Hi,
      I never got any message!
The oils are not that fussy, really. From memory, the oil baths are ISO 68 and you can use slideway oil etc for everything else. (some people use car oil for the lot!!)
If you are in a production environment then the type of oil may matter. For home use – oil of ISO32 or higher will be fine!!

      • Thanks Matt

There seems to be a lot of confusion online about oils,
I had a feeling that an ISO 68 or an ISO 150 should been fine.
        Cheers
        Luke
